Kennesaw State University student Emily Manqueros’ study of the efficacy of bioglass on bringing medical treatments into human bodies won the top prize at the Birla Carbon Scholars Symposium on Thursday. Now in its 11th year, the symposium marks the completion of an intensive summer research program that allows students to apply their studies toward sponsored projects under the guidance of Kennesaw State faculty scholars.

As an undergraduate student at Kennesaw State University, Ashley Belinfante scoured the campus searching for mosquitos to screen for viruses. Now, Belinfante uses those skills to aid the country’s agricultural community, identifying bacterial respiratory infections in swine and searching for solutions through a fellowship with Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) with the United States Department of Agriculture.

On Nov. 31, 2022, a group of students gathered around Jeanne Law’s computer and stared in wonder. It was the day after OpenAI released an early demo of ChatGPT, and Law, a professor of English at Kennesaw State, was curious to see what the chatbot could do. “In that moment, I knew it could have a profound impact on all of us,” Law said.

From her time at Osborne High School, Emily Manqueros knew she wanted to do research in physics, not just study it. The rising junior from Smyrna said classes in astronomy and physics taught her how physical forces effect everything around her, and she wanted to immerse herself in them. So, she came to Kennesaw State University for the opportunity to conduct research right away as a freshman. “Honestly, the research opportunities drew me to KSU,” said Manqueros, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in physics in Kennesaw State’s College of Science and Mathematics. “Other colleges mainly take graduate students for their research, and I knew that at KSU I could do meaningful research even if I was an undergraduate student.”

While leading an education abroad experience to Ireland this past summer, Kennesaw State University Assistant Professor of Marketing Prachi Gala was invited to visit the historic Irish College Leuven in Belgium, where she was offered a faculty fellowship that is already leading to international education opportunities for KSU students.

Kennesaw State University’s economic impact in metro Atlanta increased to nearly $2.15 billion in fiscal year 2023, according to a University System of Georgia (USG) report released Wednesday. Kennesaw State’s FY 2023 economic impact in the 29-county Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area marked a 5.6% increase from $2.03 billion the previous year. The total impact of all 26 USG institutions on their communities was $21.9 billion in fiscal year 2023, up 9% from $20.1 billion in FY 2022.
