Imani Adenuga can’t recall the exact moment science grabbed her by the heart, but she has always been inquisitive in nature, seeking knowledge no matter the subject area. “I always want to know the why,” said Adenuga, who studies chemistry in the College of Science and Mathematics. “I think that just goes with science—figuring out the why of things or what makes things happen.” The First-Year Scholar dove into research immediately upon arrival at KSU last fall, landing in the lab of chemistry professor Daniela Tapu where she took on a project involving sustainable catalysts. It constituted a huge leap for a freshman, given that the project is grounded in organic chemistry, a critical class for chemistry majors that she hasn’t taken yet.

Mason Hipp isn’t content to go through the motions during his college years. The sophomore chemistry major chose Kennesaw State University for its early research opportunities and brought with him a love of all things science and mathematics. Today, he has flourished in one laboratory and is learning how to conduct a different type of chemistry in a new laboratory, presenting his findings at regional conferences, and serving as an active member of the Undergraduate Research Club (URC).

It didn’t take long for Kennesaw State University student Lilianna Kocai to discover a passion for research. All it took was a little nudge from assistant professor Carl Saint-Louis. As a freshman in 2023, Kocai took a course called Culture of Science and Mathematics, designed by Saint-Louis to open young eyes to research at an early stage in their college careers. “Before I came to KSU, I didn’t really plan on doing research,” said Kocai, now a sophomore biochemistry major. “I came in touch with research because of Dr. Saint-Louis, who pitched the First-Year Scholars program as a way for students to get their start. I got involved and ended up in his lab, so it all worked out.”

A simple conversation with Megan McCabe about her research is enough to see she is a scientist in the making. The recent Kennesaw State University graduate has already racked up an impressive résumé. She was a student in the KSU Journey Honors College, earned first place at Analytics Day, finished third at the Fall 2024 Symposium of Student Scholars, participated in the Birla Carbon Scholars program, and graduated summa cum laude. The self-described science nerd speaks with eloquence and enthusiasm about the work that led her to a bachelor’s degree in biology last month, and she hopes to take that enthusiasm and knowledge to medical school this fall.

Two majors, two part-time jobs, two club vice-presidencies—for Micah Holston, life at Kennesaw State is doubly fulfilling. Holston is pursuing bachelor’s degrees in physics and political science. He is a substitute teacher in Cherokee County schools and conducts research part time for the Air Force Research Laboratory in New Mexico. He is also the vice president of the Kennesaw Nuclear Society and the KSU chapter of the North American Young Generation for Nuclear.

Olivia Walker grew up with a love of hiking in the woods, not realizing at the time she might be walking among endangered species of trees. After graduation from Dunwoody High School, she arrived as a freshman at Kennesaw State University with a strong interest in environmental science, where she was accepted into the First-Year Scholars Program to study longleaf pine forest ecosystems with biology professor Paula Jackson.
